BBC Backed Rising Alt-Rock Group Larlin Share Haunting New Single 'Sondheim'

Artwork: Olivia Ruggiero

The emotional imagery in new release “Sondheim” is a little painful at first, uncomfortable. Then the lyrical  imagery of commiseration and understanding reminds us we are not as isolated or detached as we may think. Balm to the lonely spirit.  Brighton alt-rock group Larlin are not afraid to talk about hard, moody truths.

“With 'Sondheim', I tried to encapsulate the complex feelings of not always feeling real”, explains Maryann. “I wanted to express how easy it is to have your opinions swayed when caught up in this mindset, and let others’ views of you override your sense of self”.

Haven’t we all felt this, like we didn’t know who we were, where we were going, or why….why any of it? Longing to understand ourselves. And there is nobody to help because the story of identity we must all discover for ourselves. I have thought before—maybe, no, definitely will again—that everybody has it figured out but me. The overanalyzing mind is isolating, and a big fat liar.

You don't notice,

cos I guess I look alive but I’ve been coasting

watching the years go by

It would be great if someone could just TELL US who we are. Realizing others’ insight into who we are is not going to help, or perhaps just isn’t any of our business, can take a long time if it ever comes.

Sondheim’s storytelling has a cinematic vibe, the melody is sweet and sing-along-able to. I listened it to it while driving through the mountains home in Arizona, and it was so easy to imagine this as the soundtrack for a million movies examining feelings and exploring what it all means & where we fit into it all. The thoughts raised by Maryann Hoar’s lyrics and sound aura composed by Cameron Nesbitt of Larlin are deep and heavy, but the feeling is still wistfully hopeful. Whether we continue asking who are or even if we think we figure it out, it’s gonna be okay.
