One of the best parts of concerts for me is meeting your new best buddies. Maybe you never see em again, or maybe you start planning concerts together! Either way you have found a soul connection with someone who feels the same way about and artists work. Waiting in the pit at the Crescent Ballroom I had the chance to talk to Claire Rosinkranz's biggest fans in the VIP. Bubbly kids in spankin new Claire merch, with disposable cameras or tiny point and shoots giddy with excitement.
I met fellow photographer Cailyn D, who was discussing with her friends that they did not know the opener Stevie Bill, but as ___ said “we may be finding our next favorite singer!” And she was so right! Many of the crowd had never heard Stevie before, but by song three were singing along or had hands in the air, excitedly recording and following Stevie Bills work and socials. The Guitarist for Stevie killed his Purple Rain solo - in my humble opinion Prince was and is always will be the best guitarist. Eric Clapton was once asked how it felt to be the world’s best guitarist and he famously quipped “you’ll have to ask Prince”. All of that to say when I tell you this guy tore up Purple Rain my flubbers were def gasted. Wow!
Inspired by Claire’s cover art for Lover, I shot some slow shutter at her show!
Before Claire herself appeared, I also chatted with Asher and Jill. Asher is a super fan of her work, he found Claire scrolling, then went to the Maroon 5 concert SPECIFICALLY to see Claire’s set! Claire’s big breakout was on tiktok in 2020, when so many took to the comfort of social media in seclusion. She found her fanbase, and they found her voice for all of the feelings we all had brimming at and over the surface of that wtf year and beyond. Her release “Backyard Boy” was a viral sensation putting this Cali girl on the radar.
And then Claire bounced onstage in a flow white fit like a white winged dove! She is known for her twirls and sparkling evervessence on stage. Which becomes more impactful through the evening as she shares frank and very personal feelings on subjects ranging from love to chronic illness in a soft melody or fun spoken cadence. I was curious her vocal range so I checked out Singing Carrots website and they say she has a vocal range of F3 - C5 (1.6 octaves). Well, I don’t know what that means, but I really dig her indie style. Kinda pop, kinda alt, very dreamy, and even in the darkest songs she gives this hopefully optimistic vibe.
Considering all she has been through, thats really impressive and emotionally mature for a 22 year old. A lot of folks my age and older haven’t cracked that code. While she has been a musician since 8 years old, I hate that a lot of her musical depth came from experiencing a serious illness. Ironic that her pain is also a gift for any who also are in that medical prison, to feel seen and heard. That was the one that was the stand out for me, not because it was a sad girl song, because despite it Claire will not be a sad thing! The sad girl genre is focused on vulnerable lyrics, frank women’s POV, and doesn’t hide from topics like yearning or mental health - none of those bad things to discuss! I do wish it had a different name, instead of one so dismissive and simplified. But Claire’s soft sad voice is still emotionally strong and honest. It feels like reclaiming yourself even in dark times.
Claire Rosinkranz is a storyteller glowing in vintage threads, helping you name your feelings and experiences in a laughter filled indie pop daydream!
