The Antlers at the Rebel Lounge
Another amazing ‘get’ by presenter Psyko Steve- The Antlers on the West coast tour!! Well we may not be ON the coast but the Desert is just as cool. Well as hot as LA? anywayssss….the place was PACKED. SO exciting to have these indie-folky-dreamy feeling pop in Phoenix.
The show felt spiritual, the crowd was swaying and dreamy eyed. Peter Silberman and Michael Lerner on drums, joined for a few songs by Toth on trumpet, soothed the soul with sound and lyrics that really are anything but soothing. The latest album Blight tackles the current events and collective distress of the world with poetic melody, maybe a wisp of hope that it need not be too late. Or a reminder not to close your eyes to the reality of seemingly disposable “things” like products, communities, and animals including ourselves. The writing reminds me of Shel Silverstein poems, and books like "The Giving Tree" a seemingly sweet children’s book about true love and what it takes to be happy. Its a book I was surprised to see banned recently in some states because it delivers heavy messages like encouraging women and mothers to self sacrifice in toxic relationships, or wasting the environment for selfish purposes. I think those are important ideas to be aware of, lyrics like those by Peter Silberman on Blight delivers them in soft tones and beautiful songs.
“Accidental damage,
casually maimed.
Incidental carnage,
collateral pain.”
Again, I won’t use AI or chat, so any typos, run on sentances, or crappy symbology is my own :p
